What's Inbox Zero?

28 Aug in Getting Things Done, Mac OSX

For the last month or so, I've been adopting the approach of my mail program not actually ruling my life.

Yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about :-
• As soon as the computer is turned on, check email
• Email program checks every 5 or 10 minutes
• Inbox emails start to pile up to an unmanageable number
• The email program is one of the main pieces of software in your day to day routine.

Well, that's all changed for me .....

One of the things I was looking to achieve is an increase in productivity. Certainly I'm looking at a number of areas for this however one of the initial things I quickly picked up on was the endearing phrase of 'Inbox Zero'.

Inbox Zero really is very simple. It only has 4 rules for email management :-
• Do
• Delete
• Delegate
• Defer

I'm now very brutal in email management. Mail.app checks email once every hour and oft times I will quit out of it altogether if I'm trying to get something finished.

I've incorporated an extremely efficient spam filtering system.

I've unsubscribed to all mailing lists and believe me when I tell you it was way over 60 in total !!!

My Inbox cycles from Zero emails to 5 at most. It's important however not ruling my life.
Oh and one last thing, productivity has increased by at least 10% !!!!
